Spring. The start of so many new things. A new school year. Green on the trees. Cherry blossoms. Fresh flowers. Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal.
Spring is also when my family celebrated Easter back home. Easter is a really important day for people of the Christian faith. Even though we weren’t really a churchgoing family, we celebrated Easter in our own way. I won’t get in to the religious side of Easter too much, but from an egg perspective, Easter is also a pretty big event. Why? Easter eggs.
So what exactly are Easter eggs? Some readers may already be aware, but for those who aren’t, let me explain. What we used to do in my family was boil some eggs the day before Easter, and then dye them with an egg-dyeing set you could buy at the supermarket. We also colored on them with crayons and put stickers on them. That night, the “Easter Bunny” (=Mom and Dad) would hide the eggs around the house. Then, on Easter morning, my sister and I would search around the house for all the hidden eggs. It was a pretty serious competition between us at times, but we always had fun. Just take a look at the pictures!
Of course, as a parent, you need to be sure you remember all the places you hid the eggs. I’ve heard horror stories about not being able to find all the eggs until the rotten egg smell of a too-well-hidden egg alerted people to its hiding spot. I think that might be why some people use plastic eggs with candy inside them instead of hard-boiled eggs.
Easter egg hunts can be a small family affair (like ours) or a big event for the community. Some cities and towns will have a big Easter egg hunt in a local park, and there are sometimes even special prizes available for the child who finds the most eggs.
Now, I don’t really know the origins of connection between eggs and Easter, but it seems to have a connection with spring, and the idea of rebirth.
Here, I’d like to share some Easter-related connections to Shimane. First of all, the actual day Easter is celebrated is different each year. It’s always held on a Sunday, but it can be any time between late March and April, and sometimes later depending on your denomination. This is because Easter is based on the lunar calendar instead of the calendar we use now (https://www.almanac.com/content/when-is-easter). This is pretty rare in the USA from my personal experience, but here in Japan, there seem to be a lot of events and festivals connected to the lunar calendar. A good example of this from Shimane is Kamiarisai, the time when it is said that all the various Shinto deities from around the country gather at Izumo Grand Shrine (and other shrines as well). Both Easter and Kamiarisai can be a little confusing because the dates change every year.
The other connection I’d like to share is the Mardi Gras and Matsue connection. Matsue has a friendship city relationship with New Orleans, and one of the many things New Orleans is famous for is its Mardi Gras celebration. In celebration of the connection between the two cities, Matsue has a Little Mardi Gras event of its own. Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”, and its date is determined by when Easter will be celebrated.

春。様々な始まりの季節。新学年（新学期）。木々に新緑。桜。いろいろな花。春は再生と復活の時期である。
そして、故郷では家族と一緒にイースターをお祝いした時期でもある。キリスト教徒にとって、イースターはとても大事な日である。私の家族はあまり教会に行かなかったが、私たちなりにイースターを祝った。イースターの宗教的な部分には深入りしないが、卵という観点からも、イースターは結構大きなイベントである。なぜか？それはイースターエッグだから。
一体イースターエッグとはなんぞや？読者の中ではご存じの方もいるだろうが、ご存じない方のために少し説明をしよう。私の家族では、イースターの前日にいくつかの卵を茹でて、スーパーで買った染料セットでゆで卵に色を付けた。また、クレヨンで色を塗ったりステッカーを張ったりもした。その夜、「イースターバニー」（つまり父と母）は家の中のどこかに卵を隠した。そして、イースターの朝に妹と私はその隠された卵を探した。時には真剣な競争になることもあったが、いつも楽しかった。写真を見ればわかる。
もちろん、親として、卵を隠した場所をきちんと覚える必要がある。あまりにも上手に隠した卵から腐ったにおいが出るまで見つけることができなかったという、ある種の恐怖体験も聞いたことがある。だから中にお菓子が入っているプラスティック製の卵を使う人もいるかもしれない。
こういった「イースターエッグハント」は家族だけの小規模のものもあれば、コミュニティの一大イベントの物もある。町の公園で大きなイースターエッグハントを開催する自治体もあり、時には一番多く卵を見つけた子供に特別な商品などをもらうこともある。
正直、卵とイースターのつながりの由来がよくわからないが、どうやら春とのつながり、そして再生の考え方に関係があるようである。
ここで、イースターと島根の繋がりを紹介したい。まず、イースターが祝われる日は毎年違う。いつも日曜日だが、3月下旬から4月のどこかの日曜日になる。そして宗派によってはもっと遅くなることもあるらしい。これは現在の暦ではなく、陰暦に基づいているからである（https://www.almanac.com/content/when-is-easter）。私の経験では、アメリカで陰暦が使用されることは割と珍しい。しかし日本では、多くのイベントやお祭りが陰暦とつながっていると感じる。島根のいい例は、全国の八百万の神々が出雲大社（とほかの神社）に集まる神在祭である。毎年の日にちが変わるので少し混乱することもある。
もう一つのつながりはマルディグラと松江のつながりである。松江はニューオーリンズと友好都市の関係があり、そのニューオーリンズの有名なものの一つがマルディグラである。両都市の友好関係の証として、松江にも「リトル・マルディグラ」イベントがある。そのマルディグラの日にちはイースターの日にちによって決まる。
